XFree86 ps/2 & Trackpad mouse jumping problems

I just installed Linux on a Dell Inspiron 4100. I am a moderately experienced Linux user, but this leaves me a bit confused. I run redhat 7.3 (kernel 2.4.18-10 i686)

I configured the trackpad in XF86config-4 to use ps/2, and I also have tried many other options. When I launch X, the pointer will only move up and to the right, very fast. It will also click a lot when the trackpad is pressed. The mouse will not leave the upper right hand corner of the screen.

The eraser stick does the same thing.

The trackpad/Eraser both work wonderfull in gpm. And the X problem is there regardless of gpm being on or off.

An external USB mouse woks fine in X, but an external PS/2 mouse has the same problem.

Since I need the trackpad for portability, I would like to get this issue solved fast, thanks in advance.
