having just recently gotten linux onto my laptop via NFS, i now have a problem with getting it to run X. the laptop is a dell latitude XPi P90D w/ a cirrus logic 7543 video chip (w/ 1 MB of video memory), which is more or less unsupported, according to the xf86config script.
i've found some old XF86Config's that claim to make X work under various versions of xfree (like 3.3), but i'm reticent to install an old version of xfree just to get X working. here's the link where they do it
http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaf...86_cirrus.html
and one can supposedly get at least 8-bit (maybe even 16-bit!) color depth on this thing.
aside on why i want X: i would just use the CLI, but there's a glitch with the text mode (reported by others under RH, so it's not just slack) that makes the display scroll all retarded, or not all, when you page up holding down shift (it scrolls "sideways," it sucks). i've also noticed that i don't have the full screen to type on when i use text mode, as the bottom and top 1/2 inch of the screen are black (this is odd...).
any suggestions on how to make X or text mode work are welcome. in the meantime, i'll try to convert the XF86Config file for xfree 3.3 into the syntax for xfree 4.3.0.
thx for reading,
