XFree86,Biostar M7VIG Motherboard, S3 Savage 4 video - problem
I have installed RedHat 7.3 on this configuration
Biostar M7VIG MotherBoard with S3 Savage 4 Integrated Video, AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 512MB Kingston PC2100 DDR Ram, USB MS optical mouse, MS Inet Keyboard, 52X ASUS ATAPI CD-ROM, 40 GB Seagate harddrive and Panasonic 1.44 FDD. Everything went fine until I tried to start up X. It will not start. I am using XFree86 Version 4.2.0 released January 23, 2002. The message from the command XFree86 -configure indicated that I should send the output from scanpci -v to the XFree86 support which I have done (something about finding a valid card coonfiguration but the appropriate data was not in xf86pciiInfo.h). Has anyone else solved this problem? Bob Barton |
What is a driver name in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file ?
is it "savage" ? |
Yes.
Section "Device" Identifier "My Video Card" Driver "savage" BoardName "Unknown" # Option "no_accel" # Option "xaa_benchmark" EndSection |
I have gotten around that problem by purchasing a supported video card and disabling the on-board video.

I have the same Motherboard and I run Xfree86 fine in Mandrake 9.0Rc1
but the 3D graphics in games like Tuxracer and ArmageTron are slow as hell...) I got somewhat decent speeds if I went with 800X600 in 16 bit, but I'm not about to keep my desktop at that res... thinking of putting in an AGP card any suggestions as to what would be good |
