X with fixed sync monitor, RH9

Hi all,
I'm trying to get X working with a fixed sync monitor and Mirage Z128 - it works fine in text-mode, and also [for some reason] works with window$ in SVGA.

I have some limited experience with Red Hat 9 on other computers, but as a virtual newbie I just don't know how to change the X config parameters in textmode - I have the VSYNC & HSYNC values and know a bit about the monitor - it's an HP98754A - I have used Google a lot & read many fixed-sync/X threads but have found no successful solution.

I'd really appreciate any help, for a start which is the X config file? My system is nothing special just the default after installing RH9.

Thanks in advance,
Trel

Config file: /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
These programs will help:
redhat-config-xfree86
xf86config
xf86cfg

Thanks. It turns out my video card (Mirage Z-128) was causing problems - it had been modded strangely. I think perhaps I could have got it working if it was just one video problem but two was too much. I ended up buying a new flatscreen monitor (Sigma TFT 1701M), which works fine in X.
