X-Windows Appearence

I recently upgraded my Fedora Core 5 from 2.6.16-1.2111_FC5smp to 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp and now my X-Windows looks like it went back in time to when I was in college (mid 90s). No fancy desktop, icons, and other stuff. What could have changed? I kinda like this look, so I think I'll leave it but I would like to know how to manipulate it if I want to.

Thanks

could be a million things... need more information, e.g. a screenshot, or a process list to see what's actually running... sounds like twm but a kernel upgrade wouldn't leave you onoly able to use twm.

yah, we need a lot more information, like what desktop do you run, do you use kdm, gdm, xdm, etc or startx from the command line, did you upgrade anything else, output of ps ax, etc. sounds like your display manager died and now you're only starting into the X desktop, but without more info it's hard to say.

Thanks all, I'll have to post some more info on Monday, the machine is at work. A little history:

The system is a single-board computer, Intel P4 with HT, 2.8 GHz, running Fedora Core 5 (as described in my original post) off of a SATA disc drive. The chipset is 845GV. The BIOS is Phoenix AwardBIOS 6.0.

I installed Fedore Core 5 from the disc isos I downloaded from the web a while back. I only installed GNOME, no KDE. On my most recent attempt to issue yum -y update, it failed because the cups version conflicted with foomatic. Since I don't plan to ever print from this machine, I removed cups altogether and then issued the update command and it succeded. I then issued 'startx' and I see the older looking X windows GUI come up (flash back to college in the 90s). I will do some screen captures of my desktop and post them on Monday.

I'm not a Linux guru so if there is anything I'm missing, don't hesitate to post it. Don't assume I know very much, because I don't :)

well there is no such thing as "the older looking X windows GUI" really... as i guessed above, it *could* be twm... can't be sure without useful information...
