Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

X starts then my monitor goes blank and into stand-by

Hi all,

When I start linux (Mandrake 9.2) from a fresh boot up, x starts but my monitor goes blank and I can not log in. The monitor light goes from green to amber which indicates to me it is going into standby.

I can change to another console and log in okay there but can't change to console F7 for x.

If I try to start x (in another console) it gives some errors and says something like it is already running.

The interesting thing is, if I boot into Windows instead of Linux and then do a reboot and select Linux this time x will work okay and I can log into terminal F7 as normal.

Any suggestions? Meanwhile every morning I start in Windows and reboot into Linux which is annoying.

Cheers Al

Hi

Sounds like you display/graphics card are not configured right. Not sure about your distro, but in Suse, you can type SaX2 from command prompt to reconfigure it. Try at a lower resolution and then work up.

I personally add some parameters to my kernel at startup, those parameters are: xmodule=fbdev xvrefresh=60. In stead of xvrefresh you can also use vsync, just depends on the distro. If you are just a little patient I'll look up the file where you can append kernel parameters....

My guess is that it's something wrong with the hz setting for your monitor in the /etc/X11/CF86config file.
Try to edit it to another hz setting.
