Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question X Server under Slackware 8.1

Hy, I'm new around here so please be pacient with my questions.
I've asystem composed by a 1Ghz Athlon Thunderbird, with a SiS 730/630 integrated video chipset and a AC97 integrated audio chipset. I also have 256 Mb RAM but SiS takes 64 Mb so I use only 192 Mb.
My 17 " monitor also suports a 80Khz refresh rate at 1024x768.
After all this info comes my question.
Why does Slackware give me a 640x480 resolution and a 50Khz refresh rate ?
Neither of my Sis drivers from their site could solve my problem. Is there a Linux Drivers for Sis site that I should go to ? Must I edit myself some configuration files ?
Please tell me, because I wanna escape from that annoying Windows, who cracks when you need it the most.
And if you know sites that give a information about how to configure the X server under Slackware 8.1, or hardware compatible test it would make the happiest newbie in the Linux World.
Thank you very much !

According to the mainteiners of XFree86 project http://xfree86.org/4.2.0/Status30.html#30 the support for you graphics chipset is a bit new, but try to run
xf86cfg when you are root, it will try to configure your X with your interaction. As for audio chipset I heard a lot of questionable issues about it, so I have no idea what to suggest, take a look at /etc/rc.d/rc.modules for clues (everything that starts with '#' is a comment)
