X on RH9 will not start. Help!

I have a Dell and I was trying to RPM an Intel video driver to fix a color depth resolution (it only worked at 256 colors). The RPM didn't work because it will not compile properly the sources. Error message just gives error.

When I try to reboot back to runlevel 5, X just gives a Fatal Error Signal 11 and will not even starts its configurator.

I assume the Intel RPM screwed up driver files.

I guess, I need to reinstall the original drivers from Red-Hat for Xfree86.

How can I do that? Or is there something else I can check?

I looked at XF86Config and looks ok.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

r u able to go to the shell prompt? if no then press ctrl+alt+f5 to switch to it. then edit the file /etc/inittab (with root login) in ur favourite editor. in this file u'll find a line which says like this

id:5:initdefault:

change the no. 5 to 3. this will tel linux not to go into x directly.
next, edit file /etc/X11/XF86Config
there u'll find a section named screen. in this section there's a subsection named display. here u'll find an entry for modes which decides which resolution 2 use. the 1st resolution is the last used. there add an entry for ur resolution as
"800x600" "640x480"
if it still doesn'e detect then delete "800x600"

Thank you. I got it back to working order. The problem I believe is that the maximum Video RAM is 8MB. I assume this is not enough for a 1024x768xthousands of colors.

This an GX270 DELL with an i865 8MB video ram

I finally fixed it. I just put a cheap 16MB card and works like a charm. I guess 8MB of video RAM is not enough for hires.

Thanks everyone for their help

I'm trying to get a GX270 working with RH9. Before you installed the new card, what were your specs? RAM, drives, video RAM BIOS settings?

Thanks!
