X not recognizing all mouse buttons(tried searching forum)

Hi all, this is my first post to the forums here, so go easy on me . Here is the problem, I have an 5 button IntelliMouse Explorer(PS/2), and would like to use the left and right buttons for navigating forward and backwards in Firefox(which I will do with imwheel once I get the buttons working). I have configured the mouse according to several tutorials and posts found on this and other bbs:

Configs:

xorg.conf pointer section
Code:
#**********************************************************************
# Core Pointer's InputDevice section
# **********************************************************************

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

# Add my mouse options

Option "AlwasCore"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "ButtonNumber" "7"
Option "Buttons" "7"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
Option "InputFashion" "Mouse"

added to ~/.xinitrc
Code:
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"
imwheel -k -b "67"
exec gnome-session
System:
Slackware 10
Linux 2.6.7
Dropline-Gnome current

So, everything works great, the scroll wheel scrolls, etc., but it's as if the left and right buttons don't exist. The root of the problem seems to stem from the fact that X isn't detecting the button presses at all. When I run xev and press the left or right button there is no output. So I guess the real question is how do I get X to acknowledge those button presses?

Thanks in advance for any help!
