X locking up in standby on start (ATI X850 XT)

I just installed an ATI X850 XT and installed the latest ATI proprietary drivers. fglrx loads properly and Xorg.log shows everything fine. However, everything locks up when X starts. The monitor goes into standby mode as this happens. My monitor is a Dell 2405 widescreen 24" LCD.

Even running as single-user console, when the computer goes into powersaving mode, it locks up (monitor, mouse, keyboard) - I can still log in remotely.

Some history:

- my 9800 PRO worked fine, although I did have an older version of the ATI drivers
- inititially, my card wasn't recognised (ID not recognised by fglrx), so as suggested on this forum and elsewhere, i hacked the fglrx with my card's ID and overrode the ChipID in xorg.conf

Hoping some karma from giving advice on how to get 3D accel workin will come back my way - this one has stumped me.

The release notes do mention a similar problem with laptops, but not on startup. And as I said, never a problem with 9800 on same system. A google search did find someone who had this problem on their 8500 a couple years ago, but their solution to play around with "MonitorLayout" did not work.

And yes:

1) I tried switching the useInternalAGPART flag
2) I removed "DPMS" flag

Any ideas would be appreciated ...

Three things that I notice are different in the device section generated by fglrxconfig with the recent driver are:

1) the '(null)' in

Option "DesktopSetup" "(null)"

2) the lack of

Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, AUTO"

3) the lack of TV-out management options

will investigate each further ...

I commented out

Option "DesktopSetup" "(null)"

and added (as suggested at Gentoo ATI Wiki)

Options "ForceMonitors" "notv"

and now it doesn't go into standby. I get the hourglass for a bit as X/kdm is starting, but then it locks up.

I am ready to give up.

Help!

Well I noticed newer drivers, but these did not help.

So I tracked down an rpm for the version 8.14.13 and reverted.

All is fine with this older version of the driver.
