X hangs at login screen after installing new nvidia driver for Geforce 6600 GT
I am upgrading my onboard video to a GeForce 6600 GT. I have compiled the current driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run) successfully. I have edited my xorg.conf file by commenting the "Load dri" module and changed "nv" to "nvidia" in the device section. After rebooting and starting X, I see the nvidia logo but at the login screen only half is rendered and the bottom half is white. X hangs here and nothing works...only reset.
I am running Fedora Core 4 #uname -r Linux nibbles 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4 #1 Wed Sep 28 19:15:10 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux #lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 730 Host (rev 02) 00:00.1 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev d0) 00:01.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS85C503/5513 (LPC Bridge)00:01.1 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 82) 00:01.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 07) 00:01.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 07) 00:01.6 Modem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Modem Controller (rev a0) 00:02.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Virtual PCI-to-PCI bridge (AGP) 00:09.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 06) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600/GeForce 6600 GT] (rev a2) #cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf # Xorg configuration created by system-config-display Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "single head configuration" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" # RgbPath is the location of the RGB database. I don't think you want "Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"" unless you actually have three buttons in which case I don't think you want "Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"" (for a working five button I think you also need "Option "Buttons" "5"". I mention this because mouse is hte last entry in your Xorg.0.log.
You may also want to take a look at the xdm.log to see if it has anything since the crash occurs during xdm. I don't know if RH supplied your kernel but you can't have any type of frame buffering in the kernel, it interferes with the NVIDIA driver. There's a slim chance that that's the problem as the NVIDIA driver would've (should've) squeeled when you went to compile it. Other than that, I also have a 6600GT with XDM and your configs don't differ all that much from mine. I might try bringing it down to 1024x768 with a hsync of 31.5-50.0 and a vsync of 40-90. It squeels in the Xorg.0.log but it works (for me at least). Or you can just wait for someone who know what the heck they're talking about to come along and post. Best of luck |
Thanks for the reply...I changed the mouse option by removing "Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" . I do have a 3 button mouse. I still get the same result as before. I failed to mention that when X hangs at the login screen I can still see and move the mouse but none of the buttons work.
any other ideas? |
I tried another approach...I uninstalled the nvidia drivers and tried the livna rpms. I get the same result...I start X, I see the nvidia logo, but when the login screen appears only half of it is rendered and the bottom half is a white screen.
So it appears that the problem is not in the compiled driver or the pre-build rpm...if must be some configuration or hardware incapatibility...? Another thing I noticed is that when using the nvidia driver or the livna rpms the screen flickers fast while X is starting. help... |
Well everyone I got the nvidia driver to work. I removed the livna rpms and reinstalled the offical nvida driver. I got to thinking and I realized that X was starting fine but it seemed the graphics card was too fast or whatever and was hanging up. So I turned my attention to configuring AGP. I read appendix F in the nvidia readme and decided to try and force the AGP rate to 4x since I think my motherboard is too old to have 8x (but I am not sure). I followed the directions in the appendix and recompiled. I still got the same problem of seeing the nvidia logo but x hanging just after switching to the login screen. I finally came to my last idea...In configuring AGP there is an Option call "NvAgp" telling X which AGP module to use. The default is "3" which says to try AGPGART and if that fails try NVAGP. Well I had thought previously that this default would cover all my bases but as a last resort I decided to try different options. I first tried to set NvAgp to 0, which disables AGP. This worked! I was suprised, it started fine and I was able to log in. So to tested my luck and tried NvAgp 1 which uses NVAGP. This worked as well. So every thing seems to be fine now...
Is there a way to see for sure if I am using the 3D acceleration? |
Glad you cracked it, and took the trouble to post the solution.

A less "dangerous" option would be to use the glxinfo option. Not that tuxracer or glxgears will cause your machine to exmplode or spontaneously combust, but it's just the wrong approach (i.e. is that pot hot?? let me touch it and find out!!). glxinfo will give you data about your 3d acceleration that could possibly aid in troubleshooting a more advanced problem as well as telling you in plain english "direct rendering: Yes" or "direct rendering: No". That's the "thermometer in the pot" option that I would use to see if direct rendering is working. Right tool for the right job.

TomaCzar,
glxinfo : That's a new one for me. What I like about these boards is that I learn something new every day. Thanks. |
Looks like everything is working great now. glxgears gave me ~5100 fps. Thanks for your help.
