Question X display offset w/ certain video cards

when i used to dual boot, i had this issue w/ my display offset changing between windows and linux. it was kind of annoying, but it quickly stopping being annoying when i quit using windows.

this problem has come back, but in a slightly more annoying form: i got a new video card (ATI rage 128) and when i boot my X window manager (fluxbox), the screen offsets to the right by about 1/2 a cm. this is not easily fixed w/ the monitor settings b/c then the console text gets chopped-off (i offset it left, then the console text gets clipped, but X is matched up).

a notable point is that i have a TYAN s2466 board, and it has acted oddly with video cards since i first got it.

is there any way to offset the X/fluxbox display location such that it won't affect the console text location? any suggestions are welcome.

thx for reading,
y-p

Normally the monitor settings will remember different values for text console and X, so adjusting one should not affect the other. Maybe the video card/monitor setup is being affected by your motherboard, but I haven't heard of this happening before.

You could try using your monitor on another computer to see if it retains separate settings for text consoles and the GUI. It doesn't have to be a Linux computer; a Windows computer will present the monitor with different signals for text and GUI screens as well, so that would provide a suitable test. The reason I suggest a different computer is because that removes the video card/motherboard interaction from the equation, so you can just look at how the monitor is performing.

If the monitor is OK on another computer, then it just may be a quirky interaction of the video card and the motherboard. If that's the case, there would be not much you could do about it apart from changing one or the other.

Try using Xvidtune to tweak your X settings so the screen is properly centered in your monitor.

thx guys, i'll try that. it might just be the video card, as it was pulled from a completely fucked gateway computer (something is seriously wrong with the CPU/mobo).

ry using Xvidtune to tweak your X settings

specifically, start xvidtune from a term in X and when youve adjusted things to your liking, hit the "show" button. A modeline will print in the term window from which xvidtune was started, paste this mode line into your XF86Config file (back it up first).

about this modeline: i've used xvidtune to tweak the display and i got the following output

Vendor: , Model:
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0: 31.50 - 48.50
vsync range 0: 50.00 - 90.00
"1024x768" 65.00 1024 1060 1196 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

is the modeline only the "1024x768" line? or is it the whole thing? which section of the XF86Config file should i put this in?

thx,
y-p

Yes the modeline is only the line that starts with 1024 etc
The way youd put it into your XF86Config file is:

#Modeline generated by xvidtune
Modeline "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1060 1196 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

Dont erase the current modline for 1024x768 just comment it out in with a "#" at the beginning of the line in case you want to go back to it.

Screen frequency and position...

Hi,

Newbie to Linux so please bear with me for this question:

I recently installed SuSE 8.2 on my box (Athlon w/ nVidia GeForce FX 5200 video card) dual boot Win2k.
In Windows I use a resolution of 1152 x 864 with a 103Hz monitor frequency.
After I installed Linux I was able to change the resolution to 1152 x 864 but not the frequency which is the default detected one, 98Hz. In this situation the image under Linux is slightly different (the upper and left far sides are beyond the physical margin of monitor). So, my question is how do I change this frequency in order to be the same as the Windows one?
Linux recognized all right the monitor but the only frequency for this resolution is 98Hz.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Claudiu
