X & nvidia geForce2 problems...

Hello!
Following along with the readme at http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/README, I installed the drivers NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191 without any problems. I altered XF86Config-4 file as suggested, but when I 'startx' all I can see is a single coloured pixel at the upper left of the of the screen. I also have to hard-reboot to get back to the command line.
Can anyone else suggest anywhere to look besides this log?
Here is a verbose version of the XFree86.0.log :
(I couldn't figure out how to add it as an attachment)

From what's reported and the symptoms it looks like your hsync is not correct in the XF86Config-4. You should check the specs on your monitor either on the web or the manual

Hello!
Before I plunge back into 'xf86config' hell (I am assuming that you mean I should be altering hsync with this tool, since I am unaware of any others) can you confirm for me that installing the kernel and GLX drivers cank, in fact, alter the hsync?

I ask this because I had no problems with X, prior to installing the new drivers.

concernedly,
doug

You have 1) distorted image - pixel in corner
2) there are whole string of hsync out of range errors and
3)WW) (1400x1050,monitor1) mode clock 122MHz exceeds DDC maximum 110MHz
4)(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1024x768": 94.5 MHz, 68.7 kHz, 85.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "800x600": 56.3 MHz, 53.7 kHz, 85.1 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "640x480": 36.0 MHz, 43.3 kHz, 85.0 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1024 x 768
(--) NVIDIA(0): Display dimensions: (280, 210) mm
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (92, 92)
so what's happened is the mode clock is working at 122Mhz and max is 110 so it has moved down to the next safest option of 94.5Mhz and set the display to 280x210mm. I sounds as though the gpu may be overclocked? Hope I haven't confused you even more. Check the card's specs.

2 things

Kwik tip...press Control + Alt + Backspace to exit out of a failed X Start (at any time...even if it's working)

Goto /etc/X11/

type: EMACS XF96Config-4

you can edit stuff there then push Control + X then COntrol + C and enter yes

Hello!
So it there seems to be a problem with the syncronisation of the monitor after the new drivers have been installed. I have to admit that I didn't realize that the sync settings in the XF86Config-4 file would have to be reset with the particular card in mind (This wasn't mentioned in the NVIDIA download README, for example)!

Once I procure the correct settings for this particular combination of monitor and 3d card, is there a specific tool I can use that will, erm..., *simplify* this task? In the olden days I had some harsh experiences with 'xf86config' and would avoid that, if possible.

I am using the NVIDIA Geforce video card and this card was supported by xfree86 version 4.2.1 all I did was execute xfree86config then follows the options and when you meet the option, do you want to look into the card database?(i think) then press y for yes then look into the card drivers, i guess it's 322 for NVIDIA Geforce, continue until you finish configuring.

Hello!
I assumed you meant 'xf86config' rather than 'xfree86config' (which I am unacquainted with) but there was no luck, the screen is displaying as before, ie. with a single cyan-coloured pixel at the upper left of the screen. Did you in fact encounter this sort of output when you ran (?) xf86config?

And is there any value in posting the new log file?

regards,
doug

Hello!
In fact, using 'xf86config' did not help, the screen still is only displaying a single pixel, as before. Do you have any other suggestions?

Exclamation Any Solution?

Hello,

I'm curious if there were any solutions to this problem?
I have a GeForce 2 GTS, Redhat 9 (XF86-4.3.0) and I installed the newest drivers from Nvidia that were released on the Nvidia site.
My problem is the exact same as above. I have another machine using linux (with a different video card) and the exact same monitor, so I took the settings from that computer's xf86config and I still have the same results. I've been through numberous configurations and options that were listed by Nvidia to put in Xf86conf, and that didn't change anything.
I'm quite frustrated, what else can be done?

Thanks.

It may be worth posting your "nvidia-installer.log" file here. Even though it compiled, it may still have some unreported errors. The main one could be that you compiled the module with a different version of gcc than was used to compile you kernel. To find out which version was used on your kernel, type: "cat /proc/version". Then to find out which one you have currently on your system type: "cc --version". If they are different then this could be your problem.

Hello!
For those fellow nvidia users out there who are experiencing similar problems when attempting to get their card working, the mandrake 9.1 distro (which I just installed) recognised and installed the correct nvidia drivers during the initial OS install.

My dependency on windows to play wolfenstein was the only thing stopping me from going linux full time.

Thank you mandrake team!!!
