Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Writing USB Drivers

Hi,

The company I work for has recently developed a USB device. It is a small company and even with my limited Linux knowledge I am the resident Linux expert, (which is really very sad). After getting a lot of pressure from our customers to develop some Linux support, I was asked to give it a try. We have discussed the idea of hiring it out but since this is likely to be a reoccuring problem as we develop new products, I'vev decided to give it a try.

There is only one problem I don't know how or where to start. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

You would probably want to locate as many how-to's on the web as you can. Also, read the usb kernel Documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/usb/

You will probably be using one of the drivers documented, such as the interfacing with the host control driver. Then you still need to read up on writing kernel modules.

Also, I found a document "Programming Guide for Liux USB Device Drivers"
found on http://usb.cs.tum.edu/usbdoc
downloaded form http://usb.cs.tum.edu/download/usbdoc
