Actually there are no right or wrong drivers... if anything the wlan-ng drivers are wrong, very wrong, ugly, big clumpy mess of code. The orinoco_cs drivers are part of the kernel whereas the wlan-ng drivers aren't. Really its just a matter of what gets the job done well.
The wireless tools package was included with slackware this time around so that in order to manipulate essid, rate, mode, ad nauseum, all you have to do is use the tool: iwconfig. The man page is great, simple and there is quite a bit more flexibility to it than the wlan-ng drivers.
This of course wasn't the answer to your question, but I had to state that anyway.
edit /etc/pcmcia/config, find the entry for the WPC11 and comment it out with #'s.
Restart pcmcia with:
/etc/rc.d/rc.pcmcia restart
