Won't recognize modem

Ok, I am completely new to linux. I am running mandrake 10.0 official. I have several modems, most of which are winmodems, but one of them is not, according to the compatability database. My modem is a US Robotics Model 0727, V.90 56K Internal Voice Faxmodem PCI Model 3CP2976-OEM-50. I can't get it to recognize this modem at all. It does recognize one of my lucent modems, but it says it's not supported and to look at the winmodems site, which i don't want to have to mess with. I'd rather use a pure hardware modem.

What do you mean it won't recognize it? What did you try?

Do you have wvdialconf? If so, try this:
wvdialconf /tmp/wvdial.conf

It should recognize it. If you have kppp, it has a "Query modem" button somewhere.

I tried to set up an internet connection. When it asks you what modem you want to use, it's not on the list. I don't know what wvdialconf is since I'm new to linux, thanks.

Go external

I was in the same situation. I'm a newbie as well and had endless hassles with a modem that was supposed to be a full hardware modem, a Dynalink VQH.

Anyway, the general consensus on the forum was to get a serial port (RS 232) external modem. This I did (I know....always gotta buy another bit of stuff) and it worked straight out of the box with Xandros 2, Mandrake 10, Knoppix 3.3. The only one i've had hassles with is Fedora.

However, much as it works, its only working at 14k4. This is the next little mission.

Cheers
Phil

When my Linux trials fail.....I now go back to Xandros.....all Windows are closed.

You can froogle around and see if you can find it cheaper but it does work very well with Linux.

My motherboard(Abit IC7-MAX3) doesn't have a serial port, so I'd prefer just trying to get this one to work.

OK I can see why. If you can't connect it, no need buying one. Im not sure myself so I found some links for you to look at.

http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/PCImodems.html

This is kind of hard to follow but may helps. Just look for the one with your model, there is more than one.

http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/ne...02-12/date.php

I have never used a PCI modem so I hope that first one will help.

Post back if you need info.
