Exclamation Wireless USB Adapter crashed linux

Hi all,
As my name indicates I have been saying 'oops' a lot when it comes to Linux. I installed Mandrake 9.1 on my desktop. I was using a SMC Wireless USB adapter 2662W when the machine was running windows, but this seems to cause some problems. When I plug it in my usb the machine stops responding! The capslock and scrolllock lights in the keyboard keep flashing. I waited for hours hoping it would come back to life, but it didnt. Am I missing something here ? Was I not supposed to plug in the usb device like that ?

When the machine rebooted after installation it was unable to start up with the usb device, so i unplugged it and the machine started fine.

Regards,
Linooops

Hmm, some things to check....

1. look at what dmesg says about the USB controllers
2. Check weather the adapter works on other machines you know have working USB
3. Just to make sure, is that the only USB device that locks your system up like this?

redhat

I installed redhat linux and it did not omplain about the wireless adapter. However I am not sure how to get it working. I downloaded the drivers from the SMC website. and followed the steps mentioned.:
1. Install driver
a) untar the package using the command:
---> tar zxvf SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662W.tar.gz
b) cd SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662W
c) ./setup.sh

What come's next?? How do i tell the machine that it shud use that driver for the device ??

Regards.
