wireless network connection crap shoot

ok my wireless network connection seems like a total crap shoot. My wireless network card seems to only make a connection with my wireless router, like 1 out 5 times of turning my computer off and rebooting it.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be?

ok my hardware:
D-Link DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter
D-Link WBR-1310 Wireless G Router

I'm running suse10.0 with KDE version 3.4.2

If anyone can give me any explanation or any advice on how to fix it, that would be greatly appreciated.

thank, Jarig

Hi,

It could be several things! I would check the AP channel settings to make sure no conflicts with neighboring wireless. It could be other wireless devices that conflict; phones, Network attached devices, or other WAP, whatever. You need to narrow the scope of the problem.

Not enough information provided!

I have a similiar problem with Mint.
Works fine under Pardus.
I read somewhere you need to use the rt61 module instead of the rt61pci module (Can't remember where I read it or why it would make a difference).
I'm gonna try it out now...

Re-read the thread again. Sorry! The reboot or shutdown was missed and not jumping out at me.

You indeed have a issue with hardware. You should do a 'lspci -vv' to see what hardware you do have. Make sure you have the proper modules loaded for the devices.

What kernel? Check the 'lsmod'.

If the card is occasionally connecting, it doesn't necessarily mean its a hardware problem, or module loading problem.

Aside from checking to make sure that the modules are loaded, you will probably want to take a look at the DHCP timeout (perhaps even first, since its a quick fix.) Your wireless setup may be taking long enough to connect that its at the end of the timeout period and so sometimes it'll connect, sometimes it won't.

Since I had a similar type problem, it'll probably be beneficial for you to take a look at this thread:

Look further down the thread for the WPAWAIT information.
