You probably need to download an atheros driver from madwifi.org . On the command line run "lspci |grep -i atheros", on that line you should find the model of wifi card. It looks like ARxxxxx. On madwifi.org, make sure your card is supported and if so, download the driver and follow the install instructions.

rubbish 01-13-2008 08:03 PM

output of lspci |grep -i atheros:

Code:

17:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 001c (rev 01)
if it's not detecting the card at all, i doubt madwifi supports it. if i'm incorrect (i would love to be), then how do i find the driver?

okay, after all the crazy dependencies, i got the source, tools, and docs installed. i checked lspci and the card still is appearing as an unknown device. do i need to configure the app somehow to have it recognize the card?

MyHeartPumpsFreon 01-14-2008 09:45 PM

I had a weird problem with my wireless card under Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. The card wouldn't work under 64-bit, but worked perfectly under the 32-bit version. You may be experiencing this as well. Try the 32-bit version and see what happens. Atheros is EXTREMELY popular among the Linux ranks.

rubbish 01-15-2008 09:41 PM

well, i did a fresh install of the 32-bit architecture debian on the partition i was using for slackware and the card still did not show. any other options?

farslayer 01-15-2008 09:55 PM

Try updating the pci.ids file for starters so the system can identify the card..
http://pciids.sourceforge.net/
put the file you download (pci.ids) in /usr/share/misc/ (if you downloaded a zipped version.. unzip it of course..)

see if lspci can identify the card after that..

Just discovered you can simply use the command update-pciids to automatically update this file..
Quote:

update-pciids fetches the current version of the pci.ids file from the primary distribution site and installs it.

This utility requires curl, wget or lynx to be installed. If gzip or bzip2 are available, it automatically downloads the compressed version of the list

rubbish 01-16-2008 10:51 PM

after adding the latest list of pci devices, lspci detected my wireless card.

now to make it work. any ideas?

elliott678 01-17-2008 12:16 AM

OK, that card is detected wrong, it is truly a AR5007EG. This is a common problem, it happened to me, the 168c:001c tells me it isn't really a AR5006EG.

The AR5007EG is not supported by Madwifi yet, there is highly experimental support if you patch the latest snapshot, but it isn't worth it.

You will need ndiswrapper with the Windows XP driver to make the card work, I am not sure how well it will work on 64-bit, but using the 64-bit XP driver should work.

Get the 64-bit XP driver from here and install it with ndiswrapper.
http://www.atheros.cz/

rubbish 01-18-2008 08:56 PM

installed ndiswrapper common, source, and utils for debian 64. used it to install the xp 64 and vista 64 drivers (vista just in case). everything was working fine, but when i modprobe ndiswrapper it complains there is not module present. i searched it and others have had the same problem. apparently the package doesn't install a kernel module. i searched for a module and was unable to find a module that looked as if it would work with my system. i'm so near, but so far away. any help with finding a kernel module?

thanks, elliott678, for finally allowing some closure as to whether the card would work with debian's current drivers and providing the ndiswrapper solution. as i was searching, i began to think it might be my only option (at the moment) and i guess i was correct. i guess now it's either find a module that works or wait for linux native support.

elliott678 01-18-2008 09:49 PM

I am not familiar with Debian, but you say you installed the module source, which means you must build the module. I don't know Debian's preferred method of doing this. Also, if you actually installed both the Vista and XP drivers, take the Vista ones out, they will only cause problems.

rubbish 01-19-2008 01:52 AM

it was a debian package that contained the source. no building required. without the kernel module for ndiswrapper, it doesn't matter if the vista driver is there or not. it won't work either way.

elliott678 01-19-2008 02:46 AM

You are supposed to build the module from the source, that is why you don't have the module, you haven't built it yet.

Check out this page, it says the preferred way is to use the module assistant:
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/401

rubbish 01-20-2008 01:48 AM

hey, thanks! didn't know that some modules needed to be built. i thought it was just a package built from the source. anyway, everything was fine (even modprobe ndiswrapper, due to the building and installing) until i typed: wlan0 up. it gave me this error: wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device. i'm assuming that means the windows driver didn't work. i tried removing the 64-bit driver and installing the 32-bit driver and i received the same error message. is there a different driver i should use? should i configure something differently? is this just a hopeless task until native support arrives?

thanks again for your help.
