i have managed to get 2 modems displaying now

what kind conexant modem is that?
if it's either hsf or hcf, then it will work!
and please post a direct link to your conexant post, because i can't find it on the hcl list.

as a complete newbie - i have never really installed hardware onto linux (with drivers)

how would i go about this?

do i just open the console and type:

rpmbuild -ta hsflinmodem-5.03.27lnxtbeta03042700.tar.gz
???

it wont allow me to download the pdf - it says gateway timeout

i just check the link to the pdf file. it's still working.
why don't you try right click it and click "Save Target as", see it that helps.
also, the command you posted was right, but you have to be root to compile it.

it should go that way, just like you said.
however there might be some other problem that you need to solve if this is your first time compiling a driver or etc.
you will have to install your kernel source if you haven't yet.
it should be on the cd of your distro.
