Window Shopping for Laptop Designed for Linux Mint

I found these, but they are old, so I'm not sure if they apply:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...-linux-419730/

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...-linux-419729/

As I said in the title, I'm window shopping for a laptop for Linux. In the past, every laptop I've installed Linux on, was designed for Windows, but still worked very well with Linux.

Unfortunately, Microsoft seems to be ruining it for us, and normally, even if I never use it, I'm happy to pay Microsoft to pre-load Windows, if it works with what I might really want. But they are ruining it, because mostly dual boot doesn't work anymore.

So what I want to do with said machine, is begin to move away from the traditional sense of buy a machine, store all my files on it, copy files to the machine, and have a local OS.

I want to instead, store some OSs, as images on the NAS. Some I'll get locally too. Then files, will be on the NAS too, unless I need to work with them.

Thus, the computer must pretty much just support Linux Mint, latest version, and be able to connect to my docking station, which functions for USB, and it must be a laptop. Then the "real" computer is a VM, virtualbox style. It will probably be dual boot, Windows 10, and Linux Mint. Any "real" work, will be done with the VM.

As far as requirements, due to huge usage of programs, it must be a laptop with at least 1TB hard drive space, and 8-16 GB RAM. It would be 15 inch, for perfection, and would support ethernet, or the latest wireless standards, as well as back as far as G.

Who cares as far as SSD or not, who cares as far as processor, as long as it's an Intel 64 bit, with clockspeed fast enough to run without being too sluggish, but a little bit when using Windows, is OK.

Then it would need a micro SD card slot, or normal SD card slot, as well as ability to use my CD-ROM/DVD drive I have laying around. It's an IO/MAGIC drive. The funkiest 3 pieces of hardware connected to my docking station, is a Hard Drive docking station from aliexpress, and a zip disk drive, I believe 200 MB, and floppy disk drive.

Who cares about most other stuff at all, in the PC, except I guess a webcam/microphone would be nice though. I'm wanting to get a quote from a company in english US $. I don't really even know where to look online now.

I'll spare other details, and just get to my point. I'm looking for companies to get such quotes from. If I could go with Dell as a company, great! However, Dell is getting expensive again, anyway. I'd rather not have to spend more than $500, + shipping. I'm window shopping today, but any day, if I find bargains, I might go for it! But I don't know yet.

Please help me find companies to look at, not specific models, although recommending them is welcome, I want to develop the skills to find them myself as well, through this thread. I'm sure I have the tools to find them, if I only knew where to start. Thanks!

By the way, if you look, eventually I'll have more videos on my newish maintained youtube channel. It will show cool things I'm doing, kind of! Just look up my name, and no I'm NOT the guy who's a criminal! Dennis Earl Smiley

I tend to suggest a product where the OEM also provided linux. HP is one that you might consider???

in general most of the laptops (which is old enough) supported by linux, just we need to wait for the drivers. Also in general I would check on the net if a given model works, if someone already tried to install a linux distro onto it. In general there is no general answer, every company has a lot of different offers, you need to select the most suitable one for you.
This is probably interesting: https://laptopwithlinux.com/laptop-w...rating-system/ (I don't recommend it, just show you).
Also ubuntu has this: https://ubuntu.com/certified/laptops

Where are you looking, the EU or the US markets? In the US, System76 is most excellent. In the EU, Tuxedo is rather good and certain models of Slimbook can be quite nice. I've heard rumors of HP and Dell having the theoretical possibility of pre-installed GNU/Linux but only rumors. The few times that I've looked at Dell's site(s) I could never get through to a page actually offering a GNU/Linux unit for ordering.

US Outlets, will be used in the US.

While I know that older hardware can be used for Linux, I was looking for something that was newly made by a company or something like that. Don't mind sometimes buying used, if it meets my needs, but was looking for new at the moment.

But with what you provided, I'm satisfied. This, when marked, gives me a good amount of places to look.

As for what I'm actually going to do, I think what I may do, is after setting up my new laptop, I might wipe windows on one of my just older laptops. Then I may dedicate the whole hard drive to linux mint. "Hell!", I may even upgrade the hard drive in the machine to use for Linux!

I know for sure, I don't really need 3 laptops, with 2 being household laptops! Not if they all have the same OSs, anyway. Even though it can use Windows 10, it will breath more life into it, if I reuse it for Linux alone. I'm almost only using Linux all the time, now, anyway! I just need to make sure I save my image backup, just in case I change my mind.

I think, that's what I'm actually going to do. Still wanted my window shopping though, and I think I did great with it! If you still want to reply, go ahead, but I'm marking as solved, as it solved things now.
