Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Will this work for Slackware 10.2

Hi,
I am trying to build a server with the new 64 bit hardware. The configuration given to me from an HW expert looks like this. Would this work for Slackware 10.2? Its need to run some CPU intensive programs. Any suggestions on other HW please let me know.

thank you in advance.

Most likely all of those will work... atleast when configured.

You can't use all of the memory unless you compile your kernel with highmem support, but it is adviced that you don't enable it. You can still use about 900 MB of it thou. I think that would be enough for a server. You can make a swap partition, if you think it's not enough.

When installing Slackware, remember to use the sata-image, otherwise you can't detect the HDD. And remember to install it too, or you will get a Kernel Panic.

The ethernet card will most likely work, but you should check what module it uses (HINT: Use Google).

If the keyboard is a multimedia keyboard, the extra keys might not work.

If you want to have the 64bit support, install Slamd64 10.2. It is basically the same as Slackware 10.2, except that all the packages are built with x86_64 support.

thank you

Thank you for replying.
I will download slam64. I have a 32 bit slackware 10.2 at the moment. I guess I'll have to download new one.
Thank you once again.

In a small office I have slamd64 on:

ATHLON 64 4800+ X2 Dual-core
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
4 x 1 Gb. Kingstone
2 x 250 Gb. SATA2 Maxtor
ASUS N6800GT (chipset NVIDIA GEFORCE 6800)
PIONEER DVR-110

Mainly it acts like a server: apache, mysql, nfs, samba
but offer also desktop applications: openoffice (32 bits),
mozilla etc. (no flashplayer).

It seems very stable and very very speedy.
Bye.

PS. It is better to prepare the partitions, including swap,
whith a slackware 10.2 32 bits installation disk.
