Will RH9 run on a duo-core processor?
 

I am currently running RH9 on a hp/compaq nc6000 laptop. I am having some issues with the laptop and need to change machines. Because I invested so much time getting all of the drivers, wireless et al working, I considered buying another nc6000. However, at $300-$400 used, I think that I could pony up a bit more and get a much better laptop. I need to keep running RH9 becuase I have some older database and app stuff that is RH9 specific. Any idea if RH9 will install on a newer Intel or AMD chipset?

1. If you are changing machines anyway, do not run RH9. RH9 is extreme legacy. Your apps can be migrated - yes, that database too - but the longer you wait, the worse the problem will become, and you'll either be forced to migrate or face losing all your data.

2. to run a dual-core machine, RH9 must be using an smp kernel with smp enabled.

Simon would be correct. So just nit picking here...

But technically you can run your dual-core without SMP.. it just won't actually use that 2nd core.

I had a thought - with such a powerful machine, it would be a shame to be hamstrung by the legacy OS - though migrating your required functionality is ideal, you could run one of the latest OSs (fedora 8 with the Xen kernel say) and have FH9 as a guest in the hypervisor. That is, as a VM. Just for that one app.

The advantages include having all the newer machines features working out of the box, and improved security for the RH9 machine. (And you don't have to worry about hand-maintaining it either).

To really nitpick, a dual-core can be run without smp if it supports numa (and numa kernel used). But we are heading into thrice-split-hair territory here. RH9 will install to all modern intel machines... may have trouble with SATA, certainly have trouble with RAID. It just won't run them well without much effort.
