Will my 1GB nVidia 8600GT go idle ?

Hi

I've just started using Linux - Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit
I have 1GB nVidia 8600GT card but havent yet installed the nVidia drivers.

1. Should I install the drivers from System > Administration > Hardware Drivers or directly from nVidia.com ?

2. My monitor is 22" LG LCD (L222WS) with 1680 x 1050 max resolution. Would I be able to get a higher resolution with nVidia ?

Im now wondering, c an Ubuntu make use of the 1GB card ? In Windows its mainly used for games and I dont play games plus this is on a linux machine now.

Thanks

Hello anjanesh.

Have you tried using Ubuntu's Restricted Drivers program to install the drivers? I had Ubuntu on this computer, with a NVidia GEForce 6600, and I used Ubuntu's restricted drivers program, and it worked just fine

What kind of things do you want to do with Linux? I've never heard of Maya...All I could find that had to do with Maya was Autodesk Maya for Linux...
