I wonder why mobile phone can have the functions of wifi, 3G/3.5G and 4G LTE incorporated, but most of the PC mobos do not have built-in wifi (those have are more expensive), no need to say about 3G/4G.
I think that a mobo should be able to have built in wifi and 3G/4G functions, so that you can access to internet thru 3G/4G, just plug in your SIM card to a port of your PC, do not need any dongle.
Will mobile CPU be more powerful than PC CPU one day?
Power and cooling requirements will always limit mobile CPU performance, so I don't see how the computing power of mobile can ever compete with stationary computers.
You also comment on a separate issue, wifi/3G/4G built-in capabilities. Not many years ago, PC motherboards didn't even come with ethernet, and now they do. In time, they might have wireless, but I am not sure whether there is much of a market for it.
A 3GHz ARM chip will be outrun by a 3GHz x86-64 chip. You cant just compare Ghz anyway, even within a CPU family.
Building a computer with a SIM slot and 3G/4G is possible. Pointless IMO. It could well add more to the cost of a motherboard than it would cost to get an expansion card to do the same job.
Just get a PCI, PCIe or mPCIe (mini PCIe) card.
Beryllos- wireless networking has been around on motherbaords for years now. Not exactly comnmon as the boards with wireless tend to be 'top end' models with huge pricetags. Cheaper and eaiser to just get a PCI, PCIe or mPCIe card.
There is wifi router with 3G capability, plug in your SIM card and it can download data from your mobile service provider.
Why not the mobo?
There are mobo with built in wifi, but not popular.
Simple: Desktop machines are stationary systems which in most cases are connected to the network using Ethernet. Adding 3G/4G to any motherboard would increase complexity and price for no good reason, while adding 3G/4G support with an external dongle if necessary is a no-brainer.
Desktop systems waste power to get the highest throughput. They have the fastest of everything, to the point they almost melt the silicon. No battery powered device will match that.
Cell phone processors are power limited. They have extraordinary power conservation hardware and software. They turn off anything that is not being used. They use larger and slower transistors to avoid the waste leakage of the faster transistors. They run at reduced clock rates for the transistor sizes they use.
The reason they can handle cell phone tasks well is that there is special hardware built-in to the processor to speed up those specific operations. Special vector operations specific to cell phone processing. The ability to modulate and tune special analog hardware that does the low level signal detection and transmission. This is highly variable among manufacturers, phones, versions, etc.. The manufacturers of phone CPU chips tout the ability to put special operations, special instructions, and analog support on the same CPU chip.
Cell phone processors are being considered for use in a new super-computer. Super-computers are now limited by heat dissipation. Cell phone processors are the fastest low power processors. When considering the operating cost, which is closely related to the waste heat generated, 1000 cell phone processors will give more MFlops per watt than
the equivalent (guessing, maybe 250 or so) Server or Desktop processors.
