Will a Radeon 7500 support a 20-inch monitor at native 1680x1050
Hello Everyone,

I recognize this post is not strictly Linux oriented, but I really need the advice of some computer savvy individuals who will appreciate my situation.

My brother wants to get a 20-inch monitor as a gift for his girlfriend. The monitor has a native resolution of 1680x1050. Her computer has Radeon 7500 graphics card.

According to the ATI/AMD website, the 7500 has a maximum resolution of 2048x1536, but doesn't explicitly support 1680x1050--see

I myself have an older box with a Radeon 9200; according to the official specs, it too doesn't explicitly support 1680x1050, but it has no trouble with a 22-inch monitor and supports its native 1680x1050 resolution.

My question is, is there any way of knowing if a Radeon 7500 is going to support a native resolution of 1680x1024 without stretching or resizing? Would updating the driver at the ATI website be a possible solution?

As the gift is meant to be a surprise, I can't really take the computer into a shop and test it. I wouldn't want my brother to spend 150 and end up with a monitor that can't be used at its native resolution.

I would be very grateful for any insights or information on this.

I don't think the video card cares about the format--it's limits are the speed and the size of the memory. You might have to use a modeline in xorg.conf
