will 32 bit os run in amd64 bit

Hi
I am a slackware user and I am using slackware 10 in amd xp 1800 .I was thinking about buying amd 64 bit and I wanted to if I could use slackware 10 in amd 64 bit just like in 32bit.I mean like I don't want to use 64 bit os yet!I just want to buy amd 64 bit.I know that the question seem so dump but I keep reading about ppl selling amd 64 bit window xp and at that time xp wasn't the 64bit edtion. So I want to know that if I could use amd64 just like amd 32 bit?I live in burma now, computer hardware are cheap so I gonna set up a new computer from scratch but there are not many people who can answer questions specially about linux.

Thanks in advance !

yes, but 64 bit technology is relatively new so check the HCL lists that the chipsets of your chosen hardware are supported

I'm running 32 bit Mandrake 10 on an AMD 64 - 2800+ right now. Don't want to go 64 bit just yet due to incompatibilities in some of the software I run... The 64 works just like a 32 bit machine... My 2800 is faster than an XP2400 even with 32bit OS for example.
