Wifi PCI Hardware for Linux

Hi all,

I'm about to install Debian 3.0 on a celeron 800 box. I had a short foray into SuSE 9.1 personal today but it doesn't seem to be very good quality.

I have an ADMTek 8211 PCI wifi card which worked great under Win2K Pro, but from what I can read this card does not seem to be very compatible w/linux.

I have an orinoco gold PCMCIA card from an old laptop. I think that it makes sense for me to use this card w/my computer. My question is, what is the cheapest PCI PCMCIA card reader I can buy which will be easily compatible w/Debian and the orinoco card?

advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You may not have to abandon the ADMtek card. While most wifi cards aren't supported under Linux natively there's a project at http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net that lets you use the Windows drivers (the .inf and .sys files) for these cards, and I noticed that your card is one of the supported chipsets. They have packages available for Debian, which makes the install relatively simple, and they've worked great for my Belkin wireless card so far.

The ADMtek card has a part-binary driver from admtek themselves, but you're pretty much stuck with ndiswrapper or linuxant if you want 2.6 to work as the ADMtek driver is old enough so as not to compile against 2.6
