Hi Bloodfoot,
It's very possible that the wireless card is not supported. Check what chipset your card uses (your card manufacturer website should tell you this) Usually prism is best I think.
Alternatively there are command line utils that will tell you the installed cards (can't remember off hand but I'll repost when I get to work in the morning with the details).
EDIT: Try the following command to see what's installed:
lspci
this will list PCI based controllers and should highlight your card if recognised. Then it may just be about proper config.
