WiFi modem PW-DN9210D (AR9271) question

A WiFi modem came with my new TCL TV, model PW-DN9210D. On my Kubuntu box lsusb shows it as an Atheros AR9271. ifconfig shows it, but without an address. Modules loaded include ath9k and associated which are normally loaded for the internal modem.

Initially I was only going to ask what the button on the side of the modem was for (no documentation supplied).

I've checked the HCL and found 2 entries, one of which indicates the button is for encryption. The modem reviewed was from a different maker but the function is probably the same. I won't be using it.

The entry did indicate that the modules I have loaded for the internal modem are sufficient, but mentioned firmware in the kernel(?).

Do I need to update my Kubuntu 12.04 3.2.0-58-generic-pae to something more recent? I've built many kernels when using Gentoo, but have yet to do it the "Ubuntu Way."

Edit - more info
It gets no IP address.

I'm confused. Three successive "iwlist scan" give 3 different responses. The USB modem with the AR9271 is not responding. The Address: D8... does not match any HWaddr.

I get the following in /var/log/syslog (slightly modified) when the modem is attached. I don' see any problems...

Hi

as you suspected this needs firmware altho I don't use your distro in Debian its called
firmware-atheros

snip...Binary firmware for Atheros wireless cards This package contains the binary firmware for USB wireless network and Bluetooth cards supported by the ar5523, ar9170, ath3k, ath6kl_sdio, ath6kl_usb or ath9k_htc drivers.

list culled includes
* Atheros AR9271 firmware (ar9271.fw)

since you are using the internet you should be able to grab it and copy into your distro partition using root powers,
reboot into your distro and run

Code:
sudo dpkg -i firmware-atheros*.deb
this comes from the non-free repo so if your apt sources.list does not have non-free or you don't want to enable it you could try a direct download
YMMV

http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/d...s_0.40_all.deb

good luck

the next issue is you need to post the output to
Code:
lsusb
we need to see the exact numbers and there appears to be multiple choices as per
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...9k_htc/devices

What source do I need to add to get it?

I downloaded it using your link. I cannot get it to install.

The first time using an emacs shell in Kubuntu the system froze and required cycling the power to recover. The display stopped at
Code:
Reading database (90% ...)
The second time from the command line with no X running:
Code:

did you read my post 3

I specifically mention that there are multiple choices as per link

I repeat lsusb pls

2) based on your command output, don't know why you are using emacs?

you have a kernel module that might conflict with my deb file
so don't force that one any more pls

3) based on your output you already have firmware for some devices as per
/lib/firmware

I suggest you run lsusb check my link to see if it uses the ath9k_htc kernel module that I already linked to

good luck

separate post

based on your output showing you already have htc_7010.fw from linux-firmware

In debian that file is in firmware-atheros

so it looks like you can't use a deb file from my direct link
oh well

so back to the link in reply 3

if you have a lsusb output of 0cf3:9271 then you should be able to modprobe ath9k_htc using root powers

leaping ahead if you don't, then don't modprobe that kernel module

but then we still need to know your exact lsusb output

according to post 7 you have a match

0cf3:9271....assuming that is your lsusb output

claims you don't need firmware so thats my mistake

sorry to have troubled you

do a full reboot and assuming we agree on your lsusb match now show

Code:
lsmod

ok thats good

lets take a snip

ath 19387 3 ath9k_htc,ath9k_common,ath9k_hw
ath9k_common 13781 1 ath9k_htc
ath9k_htc 90811 0
ath9k_hw 391626 2 ath9k_htc,ath9k_common
cfg80211 178877 4 ath9k_htc,mac80211,ath,wl
lib80211 14040 2 lib80211_crypt_tkip,wl
mac80211 436493 1 ath9k_htc

so it looks like

ath9k_htc loads then ath9k_common then ath9k_hw then ath -----to complete the atheros set
plus you have some others loading

######################

do you have package (in debian its called wicd-gtk)
---I am not falling for that mistake again.....grins like a sheep

http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=wicd-gtk

looks like it exists same name

can you run it pls?

Now is this wifi modem what we call a home wireless wifi device connecting to a home wireless device
or do you mean a device, sometimes needs a sim card
that I call a wireless internet device

sorry if that sounds confusing but wicd-gtk is for home wireless normally (or ethernet as well)

#####################

leaping ahead you may like to see someone with the same kernel module slightly different hardware
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=ath9k_htc

###################

the reason why I am suggesting an independent network manager, is I presume you have already tried *buntu's and failed

good luck

Thanks for your patience so far.
I have no wicd installed, but have avialable
wicd Metapackage
wicd-kde
wicd-gtk
wicd-cli
wicd-curses

wicd-kde wants far fewer additional packages than wicd-gtk. Will it do?

wicd-kde pulled in wicd-gtk so I guess it does not matter.

When I run it with the internal wireless disabled, it says no wireless networks are available.

It occurred to me that as yet I have not used the internal wireless
Code:
0a:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
I've tried all the encryption possibilities that only want a passphrase but the phrase that works on 3 other machines is not accepted from this one, an HP Pavilion dv6.

Also, while I have its MAC address assigned a fixed IPv4 address in the router, ifconfig only shows an inet6 address for it. The wired connection gets its assigned v4 address.

Hi

lets talk more about your router
Quote:

I may be reading this wrong so forgive me.

I can do a thing call MAC filtering, that is only specified MACs get to use my network
If your router has same security feature, the first thing you need to do temporarily is turn off MAC FILTERING

then check if your router talks to your hp wireless device.

2) I don't use KDE but I suspect wicd-kde should have same functions as the gtk model

3) now broadcom has a number of links for you to go thru

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

http://askubuntu.com/questions/94021...an-asus-1015px

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2067185

that last link has a number of commands to try, but to state the bleeding obvious
---we need you to disconnect the usb modem device......as you will notice a number of kernel modules mentioned that "might" need blacklisting

######################################

but I am not sure you have answered the usb modem question

what kind of device is this?.....I am still confused over your use of term wifi and modem as in australia
wifi means wireless for home router
but modem means wireless internet

can you clear this up?

also
is the device a part of the tv or separate?

that is, does the usb lead go into the tv to get access to it,
in which case your tv system menu may need to enable it

No MAC filtering. Any device can connect. I have 14 addresses pre-assigned for NFS control. Any other devices get the first available address outside the controlled range.

Sorry for the modem confusion. I'm trying to use the USB device to access the router's access point.

It came with the TV but appears to be an independent device. I just tried using it with the TV. It was recognised, but a bug in the TV did not allow entry of text for the A/P password. I did get a message saying "invalid password" so it appears that the device works.

Unfortunately now when I plug it into my HP, lsusb shows it but ifconfig does not. The TV did something to it.

If I had any marbles left, I'd be rapidly losing them...

I just tried the HP wireless again and got connected. The differences from previous times that I'm aware of are
- the wired connection was active (It got disconnected when the wireless connected)
- the USB device was not present in the ifconfig output.

Perhaps the USB device was causing the problem?

I'll implement the blacklist if I continue to have the problem, but since I normally use a wired connection it's not really an issue.

I may have to write it off. I'm not interested in "Smart TV"
