Hello folks,
I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 7.04 because I wanted to get into the Linux world. But it's not cooperating with my Widescreen monitor (1440x900 and nVidia GeForce FX 5500 card). Nothing, not even an nVidia driver would make it work right.
Is their a distro of Linux that does work well with Widescreen? The Debian and Ubuntu UI would be a plus, that's what I like the most.
I'm not sure what you are referring to. How does it not work with the widescreen monitor? Widescreen support is not really an issue that is related to a distribution, as long as the video driver goes that high, you can set it to whatever you want.
Are you just not seeing a widescreen resolution from the pull down menu? Have you tried manually entering the resolution in the xorg.conf file?
Yes, I have tried entering 1440x900 into the xorg.conf file, but when I save it, it's still not an option when I restart!! I was able to change settings in the Nvidia control panel, but it forgets what I did when I restart.
Running 1440x900_75 with xfx nvidia 6800gs PCIe Slackware, Debian, and Opensuse.
Another 1440x900_75 with nvidia 5200FX AGP Ubuntu and Gentoo.
Working perfectly in Slackware, Debian (difficult config), and Opensuse. Have it working in Ubuntu and Gentoo on my wifes computer. I had to let the nvidia installer set the resolutions for my monitor. have you tried the nvidia settings manager? Did you get the driver from nvidia, did you have it update the xorg.conf file and try changing the settings with the nvidia settings manager?
Hey folks, I happened across this thread when i googled tractordriver88.
Yes, I did try all that back in May, but ended up giving up, didn't want to waste more time on it. Went back to Windows.
I do plan to give Ubuntu 7.10 a try tomorrow and see if it fixes those issues.
