Wicd - no Ethernet connection without a switch
I have my computer connected to a switch that is connected to the modem-router. Today I decided that I don't need that switch. I used it for some time due to some arrangement I don't need anymore. I removed it and connected the computer directly to the modem-router. And Wicd just won't find a wired network anymore, only Wifi spots. I even rebooted, but it didn't work. I reinstated the switch and it works again. Why does that happen?

Wicd - no Ethernet connection without a switch
Couldn't it be caused by the wire? IIRC there are crossed and straight wires. Perhaps the switch is making things right with a wire that can't do directly?
Edit : "straight through" vs "crossover cable", see here https://www.groundcontrol.com/galileo/ch5-ethernet.htm

Some modems bind to the MAC address of the first device it sees. Try removing the switch, power off the modem and connect the computer then power up the modem.

I did that. The computer and modem were off when I had the idea, I removed the switch, connected the computer directly and turned everything on. Go figure. I also tried running 'arp -a' but I guess that is useless in this case.

wlan0 might have become wlan1.
will mention this
If it did switch. You need to tell wicd in preferences. I run into this when I change wifi cards. But not installs.
