I found the Panda to work very well, and then I had Network Manager problems, and nothing worked.
I have heard some reports that Network Manager under Gnome does not connect to USB WiFi.
What I have done recently that worked was to install Debian from an Internet install CD; minimal desktop; install all available drivers; minimum KDE.
That worked with my new laptop. An older motherboard would not recognize the drivers that I had on a thumbdrive. In order to install the OS on that motherboard, I used a USB to Cat5 dongle to load the OS, and then loaded the network drivers using apt-get after the OS was installed.

Panda is great.
This has worked on every distro I throw at it, most work as plug and play. If Debian you need to install the non-free driver.
