Why would my 5GHz suddenly stop working?
No settings have changed, it just quit working 2 days ago. When I try to access it. The 2.4GHz is still working. Mercury retrograde?

Please read this, then provide some more information.
How do you know it stopped working?
Did anything in your configuration change before this happened?
Was there an update involved?
And so on.

Do other devices connect to 5GHz?
Is it a separate ssid from the 2.4GHz? If so can the PC see the ssid?
Could be be bad hardware.

SSID is the name the router or access point transmits as an identifier. You should be able to see it when you try to connect from network manager.

hapibeli,
I suggest that you first install the Wifi Analyzer (open-source) app on an Android phone. Other apps are available.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...m.wifianalyzer
This will tell you whether there is any output from your 5GHz network.
In my case there was a particular bug with the Broadcom BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43a0] (rev 03) so that it does not see 5GHz networks with a high channel number.
See confirmed bug #1574196 at Launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...l/+bug/1574196
To rectify this, it is necessary to login to the router and change the channel for the 5GHz to a lower one.
In my ASUS router I went to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Wireless General > select 5GHz band.
Then clicked on Control Channel and reduced the figure from 140 maximum to 36.
Clicked on Apply and logged out.
The Wifi Analyzer immediately picked up a very strong signal from the 5GHz.
Your problem may well be totally unrelated to mine, but at least the Wifi Analyzer will tell you if you have any output from the 5GHz network.

Thank you beachboy2. I did so, and it shows up in my android as -58dBm CH 36 (38) 5180MHz ~3.7m
5170 - 5210 (40MHz)
It is a D-Link router. I should change the Channel to something closer to the 2.4 which is -41dBm CH 11 2462MHz ~1.1m
2452 - 2472 (20MHz) ?

WTH? All of a sudden it is working just fine! Hasn't for 3 days! I did call my service provider this morning early. Maybe they tweaked it without telling me...

I detest these combined units with modem, router, switch and AP all built in and possibly under control of ISP?
I have modem > router (with webserver, local ftp server and mail server) > switch > two AP-s (to cover most of my property). All separate and under my full control, except the modem which ISP can access. I have had modem/routers in past, but I always put them into bridge mode.

If it's a USB dongle, then maybe it overheated.
