Why won't the computer shutdown?

I have SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional Edition and I am running it an Intel 810 chipset. When I click "Shutdown Computer" everything unmounts and shuts down, but the auto-off on the computer won't respond. The only way to shut it down is by use of the main power switch on the back. I have checked all of the power properties and also the bios and it's configuration is correct, but it still won't power off. However, It will power of automatically in Windows, but not in Linux. I would greatly appreciate some help.

The kernel might not have the power system managment enabled by default in its
.config file is probably where the issue stems from. Edit the .config file for your kernel
and activate the power mamagement and recompile the kernel.
