Why won't Print Manager initialize?

The original install of RH 9 found my LJ 1100 and set it up along with CUPS, and printing was no problem. But after my first update I couldn't print anything.

When I opened Control Center to see what had happened, a splash screen appeared with a printer icon and message: "Initializing Print Manager...", but nothing happened and continued not happening until I finally logged out. I could not cancel the process or close Control Center. The printcap file I found as root showed no printer setup. I've tried approaching printer installation from several options on the RH pop-up menu, but with no results. What happened?
