Angry Why my debian test can't find my network card any more?

it's really strange.

my debain testing is working fine (except the sound card is never configured right). it's using dhcp to get an ip address from my router. i wanted to change to static ip address, so i tried to modified the /etc/network/interfaces file, and then tried ifconfig eth0 up, ifconfig eth0 down, and/or /etc/init.d/networking stop / start for several times (cause it doesn't work). nothing happens.

then i restarted my computer. to my surprise, i couldn't find my intel 100/1000 network card (integrated into the Intel 765 mother board) in the /var/log/dmsg log, and when trying to run ifconfig eth0 up (etc), it just tells me "eth0, no such device".

i swear, i really didn't do anything else.

what's the problem here? could any one give me a clue? i am totally lost, and don't know what to do next.

i've already tried to change it back to use dhcp, and also restarted my computer several times.

btw, i also have a windows xp profesional installed in the same computer, and that operating system works fine, including networking.

thank you in advance for any two cents you have.
