Why does the only resolution I need, only display garbage?
 

ok, after setting up my video card (which took me almost a year to learn how to get the drivers working) and my monitor, I seem to be able to actually use my computer. the problem arises when i do anything that switches the resolution to 800x600. if i try to play a game that is fullscreen and it switches to that resolution, I get a display that is really like my video card is not sure how to format the image so the monitor can see it. I have edited the XFree86Config-4 file and added the correct numbers for my monitor (I got them straight out of the monitor's manual) and my video card driver has so many options in XFree86Config-4 and none of them seem to have anything to do with this. I was thinking that this is probably just some really simple problem that could be easily fixed, if i knew what I was doing. I can honestly say that I have no idea why 800x600 is the only resolution that is being displayed wrong.

by the way, my monitor is a fairly new KDS Xtreme Flat and my video card is an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I don't really think that this information about the hardware is all that relevant, but then again, I am lost at what the problem is.

I don't know where your problem is located but I have the same card and I use the native (XFree) drivers not the ATI ones, cause I tried them and I had lots of problems. Note that with the open source drivers you still have 3d acceleration.

is the 800x600 res in your xf86config?

I don't know whats in your XF86Config-4 or XF86Config files. LavaDevil94, is right you have to include modelines for each particular resolution you want to use. I do not know if you came across http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl but it makes it easy to add resolutions and changing refresh rates at the desire resolution. The modelines are a list so the modelines on the top of the list gets the highest priority than the ones below them.

well, i have the resolution in my config file. if i didn't, then i wouldn't be able to switch resolutions. as for the ati drivers, the default drivers don't seem to give me and 3d acceleration at all. i did have to recompile the kernel to support my via agp chipset though, so that may be a reason ati's drivers are the only one's that give me the correct 3d support. also, an update, i haven't changed anything that i can think of, but after i installed unreal tournament, the resolution problem seemed to fix itself. now i can do anyhting in any resolution. i'm confused as to how this worked out, but i'm not complaining.

ugh, now i have to complain again..... for some reason unknown to me, the same problem has arised again. i don't know how it fixed itself the first time, so i don't know how to fix it this second time around. i've played around with my monitor settings and my video card settings in the XFree86Config file, and can't figure out what is going on. nothing i do seems to change a thing. my pc is gonna think i'm insane cuz i keep restarting xwindows all the time.
