Why does my computer not see my bluetooth speaker?
I bought a bluetooth speaker. My computer doesn't see it, neither hcitool nor blueman-manager. The only docs with the speaker describe pairing with a 'smart'phone, which works. hcitool doesn't see the 'smart'phone (only a neighbor's TV); blueman-manager does.

It might help to know the make/model of the speaker.
Have you tried doing a web search for "[speaker] linux"? If this is a common problem, you could well find something helpful.

Or it could be a different version of Bluetooth built into the speaker versus built into the computer?

There's more than 1 version of Bluetooth? The computer and the speaker both see the 'smart'phone. If I keep scanning my computer sees the phones of passersby. My computer lacks Bluetooth; I have an adaptor.

It turns out I need the bluez-firmware package. Now I need to figure out how to get ALSA to use it.
