Why did i broke an usbkey and my iPod shuffle?

This can be my last thread as i encouter so much problems since one month that i think about stopping computer stuff and internet.
I _like_ Linux, but i only just can run from these problems as they are hardware and people related (insuting and bad mannered people everywhere on the net, except on these forums).

I have a NF7 mobo that i bough in august 2005.
I did no modification in my system except addind a brand new LG DVD player.
I broke a PQI usb key two days ago. I broke my iPod shuffle today.

Plugging the PQI do nothing in /var/log/*
Plugging the iPod shows me that:

I can't use it as iPod and usb key. Same stuff in winblow, all seems ok in usb manager, but i can't use it or repair the firmware with the Apple utility.

What i did is i used gtkpod to add files as usual and i forgot to unplug before rebooting to win$XP.

So do you have some ideas to explain what can be the cause?
The most probable is a usb defect in my mobo but as my usb mouse works well (plugged on main controller, next to key/iPod), i'm open to answers.

what happens when you plug the mouse into the usb port that you had the usb key in? That will figure out if it is a usb port problem

Well i didn't solve anything. Can it be the electrical network? Sometimes my lights has some glitches. But my PC don't seems to be affected. I have a good power supply, but can a electrical problem pass through and crush usb devices?

hmmm.. if the mouse works in the usb port that you had ipod and key in and both are broken in windows and linux i think it is fair to say that they are broken. No idea how or why but i doubt it is your electrical problem unless you dont have a surge protector. But even if you didnt have a surge protector i think you would notice problems in other areas before the usb devices.

How old are the devices in question? I have heard it rumored that flash memory devices have a habit of "dying" under heavy use; such as numerous writes and rewrites to the device. Also you mention that you added files to the devices before rebooting into windows with the devices still pluged in. It could be that the reboot interrupted an unfinished write process and rendered the devices unreadable.

I don't have any electrical protection. My PC runs perfect as usual. The devices were both new. Can a reboot be dangerous? Because we all heard sound glitches when we shut down computers with audio on.

Hi

I have similar problems with my ipod. Not sure if my problem is the same as yours, I get some of your messages but also others. Anyway, as far I as could figure out some time ago, this seems to be a problem in the SCSI subsystem of the linux kernel (if I remember correctly). So I usually go to windows and run the ipodupdater to reset... I also get errors when using it via firewire, btw.

What kernel do you run?

I also had the problem that my windows xp wouldn't recognize the ipod...but I don't know anymore what I did to make it work...all I know is that it was pretty weird ... I think I tried to reset the ipod several times with some strange button combination (maybe pressing Menu and Play for a few seconds, there might be an faq on the apple site, or google for it), plug it, unplug it, restart windows several times in random order ... perhaps I did something else, but eventually it worked. So, dont give up hope!

I tried the firmware update no with no success.
My usb key is completely broken.
IPod can still be rebooted, but it's impossible to mount it via gtkpod or itunes.
It happened with a 2.6.15.

Hey man, sorry to hear about a possible iPod breakage.

Have you tried using the iPod and the flash-drive on another computer?

Also, have you attempted to mount the iPod's filesystem from the command line into say /mnt/ipod ?

Can you run fdisk on the iPod and list the partitions?

Good idea about running utilities on another computer, i'll try but i'm almost sure it won't work.
Mounting is impossible.
Cfdisk don't work at all, even if i start with a zero table.
