whiteheat 4 port usb

I have a Connecttech whiteheat fourport usb/serial converter.
This is supported by the 2.4 kernels. Under RH 8.0 the module whiteheat is loaded. All the leds on the device come on so I assume the firmware has been downloaded. When I try to access its serial port 1 mapped to /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 i get the error
"no such device".
I also tried with 2.4.20 and whiteheat compiled into the kernel the lights did not even come on then!
Does anyone have any experiance with this beast?
