which sound card DOES work??

i have not been able to get my sound blaster live to work. i was thinking about selling it, and getting a new sound card. does anyone know which sound card works perfectly with RH 8?

sounblaster souncards should work with no problems.

try these first

lsmod , can you see soundcard, soundcore, sb*

if no then do a search for these then

insmod $path to files/files.

then try again.

or you could run sndconfig and just try sticking anydriver in (though i dont think this is in rh8 i know it was in rh 7.3)

oh and make sure sound support and the relevant drivers are in the kernel config etc

i'm fairly new to linux. RH 8 was my first install. when i start KDE, i get the message " can't start sound i/o", and then something about continuing to use null device. any help?

Lot's of people have this problem, I have seen it
in at least 3 threads sofar. But no solutions yet.

I have the same problem: RedHat 8.0 complains
when KDE starts, sndconfig seems to have found
out that I have a SoundBlaster Live! but complains
as well, soundcore module is loaded, nothing else,
bottom-line: no sound...

just try all of the other modules, this is what i had to do in 7.3 and eventually a really obscure one that had nothing to do with my card worked :/

how do i try all the other modules?

Or you might want to try and get ALSA working I had the same problem with my i810 integrated sound, changed to ALSA and everything works.

Here is a link I found useful for installing ALSA:
