which reliable distro for which laptop?
1. All LINUX distro makers tout their wares.
2. Fine, but none seem to provide a needed hardware health warning: 'this programme may not fully work on/may be dangerous for the health of your computer.
3. This is particulalry the case with laptops in terms of three consistent problems:
(a) Displays
(b) Sound
(c) Winmodems.
4. Having spent too much money and time on failed Linux laptop installatrons, and being a busy end-user, not a programmer, I would like to know what distro to use on an IBM ThinkPad A31p which:
(a) will provide for a ATI Mobility FireGL 7800 1600x1200 flat panel display at 32 bits;
(b) will recognise the SoundMax Integrated Diogital Audio sound card and
(c) can deal with an Agere Systems AG'97 internal modem .
If these cannot be solved with reasonable ease, then it is sorry to eave you Linux, but against my will, back to Windows.

This being my first attempt here, and not having a clear idea where what goes (i.e what is 'LFS?') I have posted where I have not knowing any better but seeing this as an over OS design problem.
As to Suse, Mandrake & RedHat. SuSE is an old story, and maybe to be reinstated. Red-Hat and Mandrake may not have done their laptop homework. Too many hours for a non-hacker to spend. I just want to be pointed in the direction of the distro that works.
Thanks.
