Which NAS Device?

I'm looking for a NAS solution for home backups/file sharing. My must haves are as follows:

1. Ethernet connected storage.
2. RAID 1 mirroring.
3. Less than $500 total price.
4. 1TB (500GB mirrored) of drive space.
5. Works in a mixed environment.

Suggestions?

You are going to be in tough shape at that price. The price for the bare drives is $220. Add decent raid and ethernet and you are out of range.

Not what you asked for but some of the newer external drives are raid1. Here is the WD at $350:

If you have an old box around the cheapest/best way out would be to through the drives in it. I think there is a Linux distro out specifically for NAS (free nas?). Toms did a review of solutions a while back and this was the best answer.

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at the D-Link DNS-323. I could probably hit all of my requirements with this and just squeeze by at under $500.

You might want to look at the review at newegg first. It seems to have some problems.

Thanks... The reviews for the D-Link DNS-323 on Newegg, Amazon, and CNet are better than most inexpensive NAS devices. It still deserves more research however. I'm also looking at solutions from Buffalo and Thecus. I'll try to post a reply when I settle on something.
