My friends HP Omni 120-1124 Desktop PC is having a hard drive failure [Error: 1720 Smart Hard Drive detects imminent Failure (failing attr: 02). I want to replace the hard drive. Before making the purchase I wanted to make sure I purchase the right hard drive.
The current Hard drive has:
Size: 1 TB
Interface: SATA
I am not a hardware guy, but I am willing to learn as I am learning Linux administration.
I was thinking I could replace it with this hard drive. However, I am cautious to purchase it if it ends up not being compatible.
I am only asking this out of ignorance, because to me it should work since its 1 tb, the interface is Sata. Not sure what else would need to be checked to replace it.
I've used Western Digital HDD's for years and never had a problem.
Even if it does end up being not compatible or unrecognized (which I doubt) you can return it for a refund. I've installed 2 Seagate HDD's, a handful of SSD's and 3 brand new WD HDD's and my Linux Distro's have always recognized them.
They say the Blue is quieter but it only has a 2 year warranty and has a slower access time. The Black is considered the best performance wise of the WD drives and it comes with a 5 year warranty. To me, the manufacturer's warranty period is an indication of how much confidence the manufacturer has in the drive. However, the WD Black is $20 more.
As far as compatibility, any standard 3.5" sata drive will do. Western Digital and Seagate are the main manufacturers. Most of the people I know that do gaming builds for a living will not touch a Seagate these days. Seagate had some serious quality control issues in the past and its reputation took a serious hit.
