Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

which Abit board?

I fancy an Abit board, nothing cutting edge. The AM2 KN9 with an NF4 Ultra chipset looks good. This chipset has been around for quite a while and so should present no real problems with compatibility.

However, for only a little more money I could get a KN9-S with a NF550 chipset. Would this be superior and equally compatible?

Now a very simple question. I use an external serial modem for my dial-up connection. These boards don't have a serial port. Do they have a built in modem or will I have to buy something else?

Thanks in advance

Hi -

1. I've had good luck with my ABIT, NF8 board nuder Suse Linux 10 (much better luck, I might add, than I've had under either Windows/XP Pro 64 or Windows/XP Pro on the same PC, in dual-boot mode).

IMHO, either option you mentioned should work fine.

2. If you're stuck with dial-up, it sounds like you'll probably have to buy a PCI modem.
Be sure to buy a hardware modem (even though they're more expensive); do *not* get a (cheaper) WinModem.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Hi Fellas,

Sorry I haven't thanked you earlier for your replies. Been busy looking up mobo specs.

J.W, the Intel board in your sig HCL seems great. However in the UK it is very rare and very expensive for something pretty ancient so I'm still looking. Slowly, very slowly, my requirements are clarifying themselves in my mind.

I appreciate your advice.
