Where to find and install libc header files in Ubuntu Studio for dual monitors
 

Hi Everyone

Im using Ubuntu Studio 8.04

I'm trying to install the Nvidia drivers for a dual monitor setup.
When I run the install program it tells me
"no pre-compliled kernal interface was found to match your kernal....
Download from Nvidia...yes/no."

a couple of other messages regarding no match to my kernal was not found and it wants to recompile my kernal. I click yes,

then it says.
"you do not appear to have the Libc header files installed on your computer. Please install your distro's Libc development package.....ok

Ive have checked the install disk for Ubuntu Studio 8.04 and the files may be there but Im not sure what I'm looking for.

I have also checked the Synaptic Package manager and it lists many files when I search for "libc" but none specifically say "Libc headers"

So my question is, where are these header files located, what directory and where do I copy them to?

apt-cache search libc

may help and display a lot of files. The header files come with packages ending with -dev

Why not install the nvidia stuff with Synaptic ?
... Then all dependencies are taken care of.

Else :
install 'libc6-dev' and 'linux-headers-< your version >
with Synaptic.
.....

I did use synaptic under ubuntu 8.1 and it worked fine. However it doesnt seem to
find the files it needs for Ubuntu Studio

Im going to try you listing for

install 'libc6-dev' and 'linux-headers-< your version >
and will let you know what happens

I ran the script you listed and we are making progress.

install 'libc6-dev' and 'linux-headers. it found two files and installed them

I get farther with the install but it is looking for the kernal path now.

the error now says,

Unable to find the kernal cource tree for the currently running kernal. Please make
sure you have the kernal souce files installed and they are properly configured.
... you may have to specify the kernal souce path with the ' --kernal-source-path'
command line option.

I have been looking for location of the kernal but this is were my lack of knowledge
of linux shows. I dont have any idea of where to look

So once again Im asking for you input.

apt-cache search nvidia
or
apt-cache search kernel
will again display a lot of useful results. You may try
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source
but there are other options and we don't know your hardware

thanks for responding, My desktop is an Acer Aspire, with an AMD 3600 64 bit processor,
3.5 gigs of ram. two hard drives. one 250gig with win xp, the main drive is a 500 gig
that is partitioned as 100 gig ubuntu 8.1 32bit for general work, and 400 gig for Ubuntu
Studio 64 bit, which I plan to use for video editing. My vidio card is a new Nvidia GeForce 9500 with 1 gig of video ram, and dual hdmi outputs, that run two Acer H233H 23 inch monitors.

I ran the scripts you listed and they did indeed show an lot of info. It seems that most
of the header files reside in a directory x86/x86_64.

I was thinking about why my 32 bit ubuntu was able to download the nvidia drivers and the
64 bit was unable to find them. I then realized that they were two different versions,
8.04 vs 8.1. must have been a blonde moment even though Im not a blonde!

I decided to let the Studio version upgrade to 8.1 and see if I was able to find
the Nvidia files then.

It is still upgrading now. ( Im using my laptop )

I did check to see if the repositories were the same, and they were?
I did a search for nvidia and found a few other files that did not help after installing
them.

Ill let you know tomorrow how things turn out after the upgrade.

Where to begin......

the last two days have been frustrating to say the least.
I did upgrade to Studio 8.1, which broke several things that I wont go into now.

On the plus side when I used Synaptic to find the Nvidia drivers it did find version 180. (version 185 is the latest)
I installed 180 which placed a shortcut under System/Admin for Nvidia. when I clicked on it it told me that X server was
not installed and I needed to install X server. Using Synaptic I selected X server, which uninstalled the Nvidia
driver version 180.

It placed a short cut for Nvidia X server settings in the System/Admin menu, which when I click on it it says
Im not running the Nvidia X server and I need to run Nvidia Config as root. when I do that it screws up my xorg.conf
file and I have to boot into termial mode and restore my backup of xorg.conf before I can boot normally.

Im very fed up with studio and thinking of wiping it completely and installing a 64 bit version of Ubuntu, unless
anyone has any suggestions.

I have even considered taking my ex'es AK47 and shooting the blankety blanking thing!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to suggest them.
