in your dreams? heh...at least here it's only pipe dreams thinking like that..there's no way getting a machine that doesn't have windoze installed, unless you get mac. that is, no linux unless you remove win yourself and install it...

that's bad. but true. at least yet.

Now that's not true. Many companies make machines with Debian pre-installed. http://www.es.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed And Mandrake has an OEM program for companies that want to pre-install Mandrake. http://www.mandrakesoft.com/partners/oem Don't count on getting something like that from a major company like Dell but there ARE definitely companies selling Linux boxes.

And, to the original poster, depending on which Linux distribution you get, you can easily update the software yourself. Mandrake, for example, has a package tool that will find, download, and install updates with the push of a button - VERY convenient. RedHat, Fedora, Debian, and most other distributions have similar updaters. Slackware's package tools are rather primitive though - don't bother with Slackware unless you are an expert with extra time on your hands.

Linux PCs

Try Los Alamos Computers:

http://www.laclinux.com/en/Start

I did not buy from them but I used their configurations as a guide when building my own dedicated PC. I noticed that someof their PCs were powered by Intel D865 PERLK motherboards and using nVidia GeFrorce FX video cards so I figured that motherboard/videocard combo should run Mandrake 10 fine.

It did for the most part... I had to download the OSS drivers to get the onboard sound to work.

I had a not so great experience with Linux on an nVidia nForce2 motherboard (ASUS A7N8X Deluxe). It was locking up intermittently and was only fixed (not totally though) by adding the parameters nolapic, etc. on the LILO boot config. No lockups whatsoever with the Intel PERLK... thanks to Los Alamos Computers in part.
