Where shall I load Suse Linux? Primary Drive?
 

I have a AMD computer, 1.9 GHz. with a single HDrive 40 GB. and Windows98SE.
I intend to install a Maxtor 120 GB Harddrive as a secondary hard drive.
Where shall I load the linux Suse?

Shall I delete my Windows 98 SE on the primary drive and create a new partition for Linux , 1 partition for linux,1 small partition for File System Reiser and i partition for Linux Data? After Linux suse is installed, I guess I will have to reinstall Windows 98 SE

I am in the dark as to what comes first, so a step by step explanation would be veery helpful.

I don't think I can load the linux-suse on the new secondary hard drive, it seems to me that the linux-suse should be on the primary hard drive and come first, before Windows SE 98. Am I right?

What is the preferred boot-program, LILO or GRUB?

It doesn't matter where you install it, it just matters how you manage your boot loader. You can install it to the second hard drive, just be sure to install the boot loader, either to primary harddrives MBR or you can install the bootloader to the second harddrive and change the boot order in BIOS. You can install Linux without touching Windows and your files on primary harddrive.

Leave the Windows drive alone and put Linux on a seperate drive. Use Linux as your boot drive and do not erase the MBR on the Windows drive. This way you can select either drive to boot to in the BIOS if LILO or GRUB (mult-boot loaders) are not yet configure properly to boot to Windows.

You can use the 120 GB hard drive for winows by cloning the partition using Norton Ghost or using utilities from SystemRescueCd. Then use the 40 GB hard drive for Linux.

To be safe, you can disconnect the windows drive before installing Linux.

You can use either LILO or GRUB. I picked GRUB because you can easily change the config with another distribution like Knoppix instead or re-installing the bootloader like LILO every time the config file is changed.
