Where / how to report non-working hardware on Linux kernel (Mac mini 2018)

Greetings everyone,

I have a Mac mini 2018 that works fine with macOS, however I also want to run Linux on it from time to time. I already use VirtualBox on macOS to run Linux, but for some things, I want to have a bare-metal experience.

When booting Ubuntu 18.04.x and Linux Mint, I can get to the desktop but the Intel UHD Graphics 630 is not supported (xrandr just reports that it's 'Default' and not an actual VGA-0, DP-0, etc), sound doesn't work and the wifi doesn't work either.

Because it's a newer model, I don't expect perfection from Linux, but these very unsupported pieces of hardware make it difficult to use. Where should I report these issues? Do I report them on the Linux kernel bugs system? Do I report them on the distro's own bug tracker? Where would be the best place to do this?

Thanks all!

Will B

What does
Code:
inxi -GxxSaz
report? Was it necessary to use nomodeset with those installers? If so, it's probably been retained in Grub and is blocking the competent DDXes and needs to be removed from /etc/default/grub and /boot/grub/grub.cfg. You can test this by using the E key when the Grub menu appears to remove it from the linu... line (which is likely to be wrapped) if present.

The xserver-xorg-video-intel DDX that those two distros include in default installs is not the preferred driver for the 630. That driver's last official release was over 4 years ago. Intel developers for over 4 years have been putting their focus on the default Xorg DDX, named modesetting, which is not a separate package, but included in the server package, and should be automatically be used as long as the Intel DDX package is not installed. With the modesetting DDX, most common output names are eDP-1, HDMI-1 and DP-1. Any existing VGA or DVI connectors are usually assigned a DP or HDMI CRTC name.

18.04 installation media with 4.15 kernel would seem pretty certain not to support at least some hardware released in 2018. Given its 18.04 foundation, I wouldn't expect any material difference from Mint's 4.15 kernel. OTOH, 630 was a 2017 introduction, so I'd expect it should be fully supported since long enough ago in Linux to be part of those distros. If it's not, I would not expect whatever Apple might have done specially to be your problem. The 630 works for me on openSUSE 15.0, 15.1 and Tumbleweed, Debian 10, Kubuntu 18.04 and Mint 19.1, but neither of mine are on laptops.

I'd test a distro newer and not based on *buntu distro before blaming the 630 if neither removing nomodeset nor the Intel DDX is your solution.

Thanks mrmazda.

I'll check that out soon since the mini hasn't been used for a little bit and is not hooked up.
